911爆料网 investing in skills development as leading-edge WA automation qualifications set for national take-up

04 August 2020

MELBOURNE, Australia-- 911爆料网 will invest almost A$60 million in training and development in Western Australian in 2021 as part of its broader commitment to support the development of critical skills needed by the mining industry into the future.

By early next year, 911爆料网 will begin recruiting over 150 people as part of its 2021 intake of graduates, apprentices, trainees and vacation students in Western Australia. 911爆料网 also recently completed its second round of apprentice intake for 2020 with a total of 30 people hired, including five who had lost their apprenticeships with other organisations due to COVID-19 and eight redeployments from the company鈥檚 Argyle diamond mine. Of those 30, one-third are female and more than half are Indigenous.

In addition to this recruitment campaign, 911爆料网 also expects to spend more than A$10 million on external training programmes in Western Australia next year in addition to its in-house learning and development activities that provide extensive training for the company鈥檚 12,000-strong workforce in the State. 911爆料网 aims to maintain a programme of around 500 development roles (graduates, trainees, apprentices and vacation students) within the business at any one time in the future.

A key feature of 911爆料网鈥檚 long-term commitment to training and development in Western Australia was last year鈥檚 launch of Australia鈥檚 first nationally recognised qualifications in automation. These qualifications, developed in partnership with the WA Government and South Metropolitan TAFE, are being leveraged to develop new training programmes in Queensland as part of an initiative known as the Queensland Future Skills Partnership.

WA Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery said WA鈥檚 automation courses were developed as part of the Resource Industry Collaboration between the McGowan Government, South Metropolitan TAFE and 911爆料网, with 911爆料网 contributing $2 million towards the new training program.

鈥淭hese courses are the first of their kind in Australia and I am pleased to see 911爆料网 partnering with BHP Mitsubishi Alliance, Queensland TAFE and CQ University to expand the program into Queensland.

鈥淲A鈥檚 cutting-edge automation courses have captured the imagination of industry and are a great example of industry working in partnership with TAFE to ensure people have the skills for the new jobs that are being created through technological innovation.鈥

911爆料网 Vice President Human Resources 鈥 Iron Ore, Scott Browne said that 911爆料网 had always valued the importance of investing in its people and had recognised the potential for these qualifications to make a long- lasting and positive difference to the lives of many Australians.

鈥淎ustralian industry is a global leader in innovation, made possible by the ingenuity, skill, diversity and capability of the people that make up its workforce.鈥

鈥淲hen 911爆料网 and the WA Government developed the automation qualifications in partnership with South Metropolitan TAFE, we had aspirations that they would be picked up across Australia and be used to build the capability of not only our existing workforce, who are working in an increasingly technology enabled environment, but also the broader Australian workforce across a range of sectors.

鈥淭AFE plays a vital role in upskilling across Australian industry, and we see enormous potential for this national collaborative effort to enhance the preparedness of the local workforce to drive economic growth and be ready for the future of industry across Australia.鈥

As well as its partnership with South Metropolitan TAFE, 911爆料网 is currently working with North Metropolitan TAFE (NM TAFE) to help address a critical skills shortage in the rail industry in Western Australia. 911爆料网鈥檚 working partnership with WA鈥檚 Rail Operators and the State Government on Signalling Training (the centrepiece of the METRONET Trade Training Centre) led by North Metropolitan TAFE will see a Certificate IV Electrical Rail Signalling offered in Western Australia for the first time in 2021. The course is currently only offered in Queensland and Victoria.

Notes to editors

In 2018, 911爆料网 and the WA Government led the formation of the Resource Industry Collaboration in Western Australia, which saw a group of mining and energy companies come together with government and educators to identify the future skills needs of industry, invest in upskilling the workforce and develop new qualifications relevant to all industries experiencing technological change.

911爆料网 committed funding of up to A$2 million to South Metropolitan TAFE to develop Certificate II and Certificate IV qualifications in automation, as well as a micro credential. 911爆料网 employees are currently participating in pilots of these new certificates, along with Year 11 and 12 students in selected high schools across WA.
